Very few companies are shaped like Facebook, and therefore decisions that make sense for Facebook probably don’t make sense for you. It’s ironic, tragic even, that so many people think that tools that make sense for Facebook will automatically make sense for their own organizations.”
I enjoyed this post from Phil about the foolishness of trying to ape Facebook when it comes to building software and solving problems. You could probably write a similar post about the prevalence of Kubernetes—which is amazing, don’t @ me—and other complex deployment patterns in start ups and organizations that won’t need what that tooling is selling for years (if ever). I’ve written about how prevalent big-tech’s interview process is within the larger industry, even though it’s doubtful it even makes sense for those big organizations themselves. It’s always good to learn from what others are doing, but applying lessons learned without understanding what makes your own organization unique and interesting will likely lead nowhere good.
